WPPI 2011 * Las Vegas {recap}

So, I've been back from Las Vegas for almost 2 weeks now, and life is just now starting to get back to normal. I wish it wouldn't. I don't ever want to do "normal" again. Because my recent trip was so incredibly inspirational, that I want to just keep that feeling in my pocket so I can carry it with me always. This was my third year attending WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) in Las Vegas. It was a surreal experience... surrounded by close to 15,000 other photographers, the lights and sounds of Las Vegas, and 2-hour classes that were reminiscent of my college days. Because, not only is WPPI a playground for photographers (especially as it's held in a party city like VEGAS), but it's also a GREAT place to learn and grow the craft. In my 3 days there I ended up taking 5 classes (which amounted to 10 hours of schooling). Whew! And besides the fantastic classes, there were all the vendors to check out at the massive trade show... which was so huge, it had to be housed in 2 separate buildings. I gave myself 2 days to walk the floors, and it amounted to about 4 hours total. My brain was buzzing (and my bags were a lot heavier) from all the information received.

But it was so much MORE than that. It was a complete feeling of being surrounded by my peers and actually feeling like I belonged. And the chance to explore the playground of possibilities and create the world I wanted for myself. It was such an empowering feeling, made even more so by several special events that happened along the way. There were crazy brainstorming sessions, hand-cramps from writing like a maniac, and lots of joyful tears. Because when a person discovers the place within themselves that feels like home, how can one not expect to shed a tear or two of relief?

Here are some of my most precious memories that I brought home with me:

1. FINALLY getting to meet my mentor-turned-friend, Ronalyn.

Having never actually met her in person before, I had the "first date jitters." I shouldn't have worried. We got along fabulously from the start, and even decided that we have found "forever friends" in one another. It was amazing to share this trip with her... comparing class notes and cheering each other on through our self-discoveries. And, I've got to admit, it was a lot of fun to just hang out in the hotel room in our jammies, munching on oreo cookies & rice krispie treats, having late-night girl talk till the wee hours of the morning.

2. Playing tour-guide to someone who had never been to Las Vegas before.

Now, let me just say that our schedules were quite limited to the time that we actually had to go exploring. And since neither Ronalyn nor myself are "party people," we were able to bypass a lot of places that most others might be drawn to. But even still, we barely scratched the surface. When I picked her up from the airport, I made sure to take the long way back to the hotel, to show her a bit of the "Strip." She said that she was already overwhelmed by that. Our first night in Vegas, we wandered through the MGM, New York-New York, Excalibur & Mandalay Bay. And she was introduced to the joy and pain of the slot machine. On Tuesday, we made it over to Caesar's Palace and the Bellagio.

3. Chocolate.

A friend of mine told me that I HAD to check out Max Brenner while I was there, as she had recently seen the restaurant on the Food Network, and the place was centered around CHOCOLATE as a theme. (um, YES, please...) It is located inside Caesar's Palace, so Ronalyn and I had a late dinner, drinks and dessert there on Tuesday while we were there. And it was SO incredibly yummy that I actually went back there for breakfast the next day, before my drive back home. (Breakfast included a sugar-topped biscuit and melted chocolate for dipping... how could you NOT love this place??!!) As for what Ronalyn and I had the first time around... these pictures should speak for themselves...

4. Falling in LOVE with a new vendor.

I pride myself on being able to offer my clients the best products available. The tradeshow gave me the perfect opportunity to not only visit with my current vendors, but check out any new possibilities, as well. And I fell in LOVE with these fine art books I came across. I went back three different times and spoke with two different representatives to check, re-check and triple check that this was the direction I wanted to go in. But there was no disputing the fact that every time I saw their books my heart went pitter-patter. Gor-geous! The pages are matte, but the printed images are so vibrant they seem to just POP off the page. And each page is actually really thick and durable. It simply looks and FEELS like a quality product. And let me say... you will be seeing a LOT more of these books in the future. I will be replacing my current book/album offerings with these books instead.

And check THIS out... a panoramic book! (Isn't it fabulous?):

5. Beloved.

You will be hearing this word a LOT from here on out. I attended a class taught by Jesh De Rox, and it has changed my world... both photographically and otherwise. Last year around this time, Jesh introduced a new type of photography he referred to as "experiential photography." Midway between traditional posed portraits and photojournalism, it allows the photographer to use their technical skills of capturing a portrait while allowing the subject to be completely, 100% REAL. No posing. No stiff smiles. And not only are beautiful images captured, but they are of real interactions of real couples... with those resulting images becoming captured memories. Jesh has dubbed this experience "Beloved," and it is spreading quickly.

As I have always tried to stick to REAL experiences and limited posing, I am fully embracing the Beloved experience and will be incorporating it into my own offerings. Hearing Jesh speak about this style and how to effectively use it just touched something so DEEP within me, especially as we watched it come to life onstage with a few volunteers plucked from the audience. It was an emotional experience, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

As I said, you will be hearing/seeing a LOT more from me on this subject in the near future. My mind has been ablaze since that class, and I will be launching these offerings soon. (Stay tuned.)

And, wouldn't you know it? This is the one time I don't have any pictures to show. I was just so enraptured in class, that I simply forgot to pick up the camera!

6. Time to Dream.

This was the first time I had ever made the trip to Las Vegas on my own. 4+ hours there, and about 5 hours back home. All by myself. Plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, sing to myself, and just let my mind wander. The trip there was a bit scary at first. I'm not a "road trip" kind of person, and it was a bit strange for me. But that strangeness soon turned to pleasure of my own company. And the trip home was even better...  my mind still swirling with everything I had seen and heard over the past several days, it gave me 5 full hours to brainstorm, plan and dream.

And now, back home, I have the privilege of bringing my dreams into REALITY.

local treasures

I like seeing the world differently than others. I like finding cool spots in the strangest of places. I love turning the most seemingly boring place into a fantastic setting for a photo. My favorites to date: a white brick wall in a parking garage and a covered trash bin in a park. Seriously. Alleyways are my friends, and make me smile with possibilities. I come alive with the joy of discovery. New places that capture my interest. And I'm a planner by nature, so I find it fun to hunt for new settings for future photo sessions. I haven't done this in a while, but felt it was about time for another search.

Thanks a *million* to my darling husband... who didn't quite realize what he was getting himself into when he offered to be part of my scouting expedition for the day... he might have kept his mouth shut had he known I would ask him to be my model... "Just so I can keep the proper perspective of the surroundings," I told him... But he was a good sport, and is always ready to help out. Neither one of us were really dressed to be in front of the camera. But it was a gorgeous day. And I was itching to explore. (And he loves to see me smile.) And so, we set out. We only had about 2 hours to play, so we kept it local. But it's amazing what treasures you can find... pretty much in your own backyard...

Tony always knows how to make me laugh...

On the left: "Gee, look how tall that tree really is." And on the right: practicing his bigfoot walk. Seriously. He really was.

We wandered on down the street and found another goldmine. And I got in on the action, as well. It's strange for me to hand over the camera but I trust Tony to take a good picture, even when I'm being a goofball. But it was important for me to get in on the action... I wanted to be sure to check out the location in detail. I think it's important to thoroughly test out the places properly before I ask my clients to go there. For instance, there was this cool hill and I had a shot in mind. But I wanted to make sure it was easily climbable. So... up I went. The verdict: only if you're in tennies and jeans.

Though our time, clothing choices (and lack of makeup on my part) limited us from getting some of my standard rocking images, it was so amazingly fun to simply  look around and see the possibilities. Tony started really getting into it, too, and we soon came up with a list of ideas to try out next time around (on a future client shoot... or at least on a day when he and I were better-dressed...) In any case, here are a few fun pics we captured at the second place. I can't wait for the next time!

till next time... happy hunting! Keep your eyes open. You never know what treasures are waiting to be discovered!

Happy holidays!

Merry Christmas to all of my family, friends and followers!!! I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has been a part of the Suitcase Studio this year. To my valuable clients... thank you so much for allowing me to witness a piece of your lives. It's a very special thing to me, and I don't treat it lightly. Thank you for trusting me to capture those special moments for you.

To my friends, both old & new... thank you for the laughter. Thank you for the knowledge shared. And thanks for the venting sessions when needed.   ; )  I want to take a moment to give a special "shout-out" to a few people in particular: Ronalyn Barut, Jasmine Star, John DinhEva Chiou, and all the other fabulous peeps I've met through The Wedding Pantry & Utterly Engaged. Thank you all SOOOO much for being a big part of my personal growth this year.

To my family... thank you for your endless support. Thank you for believing in me and my dream, and for being an active part of it along the way. Thank you for cheering me on. It means more to me than I can ever fully express.

So, happy holidays to all the fabulous people in my life. I wouldn't be who I am, or where I am, without you.

And to share some of my joy... here are some 2010 session highlights:

holiday boutique

The Christmas tree stood twinkling in the window. Holiday music was filling the air. It was finally time for the Holiday Bliss Boutique at The Wedding Pantry. It was raining off & on outside, but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits. The people still came, and it was like a party inside. And nice & cozy & warm. Here are just a few highlights of the day...

Here was my own set-up.

I got a LOT of compliments on (and inquiries about) the Christmas tree photo holder I used (see photo on left). Just in case anyone wanted to get one of their own, they can find here it at the Container Store.

Cards and delicious caramel popcorn by Alison Zamora of Red Velvet Occasions.

Holiday cards and 2011 calendars by Darla Marie Designs.

Fun candles by Paoling Che of KokoCandles. I walked by this particular candle sooooo many times, I KNEW I would be upset with myself if I didn't bring one home. Happy to report that I now own a mac & cheese candle Huzzah!

Handcrafted jewelry by Joie de Vie. I made another purchase here... see the longest necklace in the picture on the right? The silver leaf? Yup... it now hangs around MY neck.

Rockin' tutus, hair accessories, onesies & more by Swaddle Me Bad & More. I couldn't resist making a purchase here, either. I bought myself a hot pink & black tutu... can't wait to use it in a shoot. (Any takers?)

Aaahhhhh-MAZing cupcakes by Kupcakespot. I had to get myself a couple of these, because I couldn't choose between the flavors... had the chocopeppermint & the chocolate peanut butter. Yummy to the MAX! (And uber cute, too!)

Hand-dipped bananas by Hannah's Bananas.

Squeaky dog toys in the shape of cupcakes by PeachMailbox. I brought one of these home for my own lil dog, Jasper, and it is now one of his favorite toys. Seriously! He carries it around the house for an hour at a time. I don't know what's inside this thing (other than the squeaky toy), but it must be magical.

She also offers scented cards. Yes... scented. They smell yummy enough to eat.

The "cowboy dawg" and "cuban taco" by Taco Dawg. This is a gourmet food truck. I am a BIG fan of Cuban sandwiches, and decided to give the Cuban taco a go. Oh-my-GAWD! It was sooooooo good.

I'll leave you with these festive shots... totally cute decorations, and Gamie (of PeachMailbox) modeling a tutu from Swaddle Me Bad & More... Perhaps she's the Sugar Plum Fairy?

inspiration, self-realization, and roller skates

Pure inspiration. It can come from anywhere, at anytime. And it's exhilarating when it strikes. After feeling like a hamster in one of those clear balls (bumping into every corner and wall and getting nowhere fast) for a while now, I finally feel like I can breathe a bit. Just like that.

Here's what happened: I've fallen WAAAAY behind with conquering items on my to-do list. I've skipped a few months of sending my newsletter out, I fell behind on my blogging, and I let a few good opportunities pass me by. I've even been forgetting to buy milk. And I've been kicking myself for messing up. But, when all is said and done, you know what? It's all good. Because, as someone recently reminded me... LIFE takes precedence over business. I'd been running myself ragged, trying to be Superwoman and handle it all. But you know what? I can't fly. And I'm afraid of heights.

I knew I was falling behind, but didn't know where to start. I'd misplaced my mojo. I tried searching for it online... looking for inspiration in some of my favorite photographer blogs. But that only served as a reminder of how successful everyone else appeared to be, and how much further I had to go.

I threw myself a pity-party. And then it was over. Because every party, good or bad, comes to an end at some point. And then you move on.

So, here I am. Inspired. How? I gave myself PERMISSION. ("Permission," you ask? Permission for what, exactly?)

I gave myself permission to be human. To not be perfect. To not have it all together. To NOT complete everything on my mile-long to-do list. To sometimes sit on the couch and watch my TiVo-ed shows instead of working on things I "should" be doing.

Now, I'm not talking about failing with those bigger-than-life timeframes, or letting things slide so much that clients suffer at my hands. Uh-uh. That would be disastrous. I'm talking about the art of simply letting some things go.

I resolve to take my time BACK. It's MY time, and you can't have it without my permission.

This is particularly a great revelation for me to have right now... just as the holiday season gets underway. Because I have decided that I absolutely WILL leave time to enjoy myself along the way. Save time for cocoa and carols, baking goodies and visiting friends. And the shopping... oooooh, the shopping.

Does this mean that I'm going to simply shred my to-do list? Nah. I'll get around to it... eventually. I'm simply changing my time frame. Not everything is as important as originally scribbled. And by relaxing my parameters a bit, I find that I actually WANT to do these things again. They become FUN again, instead of simply being chores and things that I HAVE to get done.

That being said... now that I don't HAVE to do everything so soon now, I am INSPIRED to get things done. So, you can expect to see more from me soon. As a matter of fact, I've been working behind the scenes a lot more lately. I'm making things more streamlined. Kinda cool. Expect a lot of changes in 2011. For the better, I promise! And for the end of 2010, you'll see a newsletter heading your way soon with lots and lots of goodies inside. And new blog posts, too. Get ready for new book/album designs. And holiday mini-sessions will be announced, too.

Get ready... cuz here I come!

And because I don't like to leave a post without anything pretty to LOOK at, here is something to hopefully make you SMILE. Just a cute new commercial with a cute song, that gets me grinning every time. Enjoy! (and see you soon...)

Yee-HAW! {Utterly Engaged Party}

Last Thursday, Utterly Engaged threw an awesome Hoedown birthday bash to celebrate their FIRST birthday.  Featuring a bbq challenge, caricatures, makeup/hair artists, and even a bluegrass band, this was definitely an event not to be missed. (And it gave me an excuse to buy cute new boots, too!) Tucked away in the Outdoor Education Center of Irvine Regional Park, it was the perfect place to forget about the hustle & bustle of daily life. With signs leading the way down a dirt road, it only took a few minutes for the stress of city living to be washed away, if only for a few magical hours...

From the chocolate-hazelnut-nutella cake to the vanilla-drizzled chex mix, you can see why the dessert station was one of my favorite places to visit throughout the night.

OneTen {trunk show}

Saturday was a good day to be at The Wedding Pantry... After "following" her on Twitter for a while now, I finally had the chance to meet Jane Jeon in person, as she was hosting a trunk show for her jewelry line, OneTen Jewelry. I had a blast just hanging out with her and a few others, trying on everything in sight...

Here are a few images I snapped that afternoon.
