Ethan turns ONE // sneak peek

Time flies. It doesn't seem like a whole year has passed since I took pictures of newborn Ethan. But here he is now... a lot bigger and an explosion of personality.  Fearless and happy and inquisitive. And a wonder to behold. Here's just a peek of our afternoon together at the park, spent capturing photos for his first birthday.

Is it just me or does he look like he's busting out a kung-fu move?

Isn't his smile absolutely beautiful?

first trip to DISNEYLAND

My niece and nephew just turned FOUR years old. And their parents decided to celebrate by taking them to DISNEYLAND for the FIRST time. (squeeeealll!!!) Living in Southern California, this is a HUGE rite of passage, and one that I was excited to be a part of.

It was quite a little party we had. The twins, their parents (my step-bro and sis-in-law), a set of grandparents (my mom and step-dad), and myself (the cool aunt). And I don't know which of us was more excited... the kiddos or us grown-ups. Because, while I'm at Disneyland quite a lot (hooray for annual passes), it is something quite different to see it through a child's eyes... especially when seeing it all for the first time.

Everything was so shiny and new. And incredibly fantastic. The twins moved like little pinballs, their eyes bouncing from sight to sight. And we weren't much better. "M," look here! "E," look here! We were all wanting to share our own favorites with them as we went along, and were so happy to be a part of their BIG day.

"E" was SO excited to meet the characters... until he got up close and it was actually HIS turn. (Let's face it... they CAN be quite scary.) But "M" was fearless and dove right in for the hugs.

O'Brien Family // Red Thread Session

On Saturday I had the pleasure of meeting the O'Brien Family, and I instantly fell in love. With all of them. Matthew, Ashley, their new son John and even their cute dog Mo. They welcomed me into their home, put a hot mug of coffee into my hands, and made me feel like a beloved friend. All in an instant. And it was that kind of caring that I was looking forward to capturing during our photo session.

I was at their home for my first Red Thread Session. Ashley and Matthew had recently adopted John (You can read more of their story here on Ashley's blog), and I was there to capture some of their first family photos.

And this wasn't your everyday newborn session. Because it wasn't just about John (even though he was amazingly adorable.)

I was there to help celebrate their family as a whole.

Here's just one of my favorite images captured that morning:

red thread sessions // Orange County Adoption Photographer

There is an ancient Chinese belief which states: An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle but will never break.

This is a commonly-used saying within the adoption community. It symbolizes the bond that all adoptive children have with their adoptive parents, even before they meet. An invisible “red thread” connects them to the people that are destined to be a part of their lives. With this in mind, an organization named Red Thread Sessions was created in 2011 by a group of photographers who wanted to celebrate the beauty and strength of adoption.

I am happy to announce my involvement with this organization, and that I will now be offering Red Thread Sessions.

What is a Red Thread Session?

As stated on their official website, a Red Thread Session not only captures family portraits of new families, it also capture the precious, happy, confusing, exciting, exhausting, traumatic, life-changing time that is so often brief and fleeting in the life of an adoptive family.

To many people who have never gone through the process (or have simply seen the tv-version of it all), adoption appears pretty straight-forward. But I can tell you... it's anything but that. Not only is it a big decision to make, but then there are the inspections. The questions. More inspections. And waiting. (Lots and lots of waiting.) Hope and joy when the announcement is made... and  total heartbreak if an adoption falls through. More decisions, and more waiting. Lots more hope. And then joy (and normal parenting fear) when it all becomes real and an adoption goes through.

But this is just the beginning. There are adjustment periods on both sides. It's not a simple "happily-ever-after" kind of thing. it's deep, emotional, and sometimes pretty messy. But in the end, adoption is one of the most generous and rewarding things of all. In my eyes, adoption is one of the greatest gifts you could ever bestow upon someone. A chance to belong. To be loved. And to be chosen for these things.

To all of you who have chosen to adopt children as part of their family, I thank you.

For giving a child a home. For giving him a chance at a normal life. And for offering him your love.

In appreciation of all you are doing, I would like to thank you personally with your first family photos. Better known as a "Red Thread Session," these unique services are available for free to newly adoptive parents:

  • a family portrait session within the first 3 months of your finalized adoption to capture family portraits of your new family
  • a homecoming session where I'd meet you at your home to capture the arrival of your child and the first moments with your family
  • a birth photography session to capture the birth of the adoptive child in an open adoption

Please visit the website of Red Thread Sessions for more details/qualification information. Or if you are ready to get started, you can contact me directly. I will be offering up to 6 of these sessions per year (and more if my schedule permits).  I look forward to meeting your beautiful family.

Why my involvement with this cause? Not many people know this, but before becoming a photographer it was my dream to be a psychologist/therapist/counselor of some kind. I graduated from Cal State Fullerton with my B.A. in Psychology, then went on to work in a few different children's group homes. I fell in love with the children's spirits (even when they were being their most difficult), but was heartbroken at seeing the reality of "the system" from the inside. I wanted to delve further into this field, but life had different plans for me. I am someone who takes everything to heart and found that I was just too "soft" to continue in this line of work. I wasn't able to leave things "at the door" and took the stress of the situation home with me. After months of insomnia, nightmares and near ulcers, I was forced to re-evaluate my path in life. Changing the direction of my life was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make.

And so, I went on to pursue other dreams, never leaving this one far behind. I've continued to work with kids... volunteering, teaching and empowering them whenever an opportunity arises.

When I hear of an adoption... I light up with joy. Parents given a child they thought they'd never have, and children given a family they've always wanted.

One less kid who has to grow up in "the system," and one more family given the chance for happiness and love.

To all adoptive families... I thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

get real.

I just can't say this enough... I LOVE what I do. I am so appreciative of every person and each and every family that I photograph. Because time is precious, and so I'm ever so grateful that they are sharing a piece of their lives with me. Especially since I get to see the REAL them.

Because I don't do the "sit here and smile" type of photos. I capture REAL life as it happens. And sometimes life gets messy. That's okay.

Especially when dealing with kids... I know not to expect perfection, and I never ask that of them. I know how it is. Sometimes there are tears and tantrums. Sometimes there are diaper explosions or potty training moments. Sometimes there are messes that make it into the mouth, down the chin and onto the shirt. And sometimes they just won't sit still, even for a moment.

Let me repeat: That's okay.

Kids are kids. And this is real life.

So I wanted to  share a bit of my "behind the scenes" with you so that you see that, while I don't deal with "perfection," I still capture beautiful moments.

Here's how: I don't ask for perfection. I don't force it. Not even a little bit. So if you have nightmares of past portrait sessions... trying to hold a pose, get your kiddo to stop wiggling and smile for just ONE picture (pretty please), while you're crossing your fingers that it happens without a meltdown... don't worry. This will NOT be your experience with me. Cross my heart.

Because I play. I work with the kids' attitudes and energies, and incorporate that into the portrait session. We get natural movement, natural poses, and that natural smile that you love so much. And I get a workout. I bend, twist, run, and do whatever I need to do to capture those moments.

From music, to toys, to treats and games, it's an ebb and flow of activity.

I wanted to give you a peek "behind the curtain," so to speak... using these pictures from a recent family shoot to help me beautifully illustrate my point.

This is William, Jon and twin girls Rachel and Rebecca. I took their family photos before, and they recently came back for more. Two-year-old twin girls are a handful, but so adorable to see. Here is how our morning went:

We decided to hold the session in the yard of William's sister's house. More than just pretty, the location held a personal connection to them. I spread a blanket on the grass so their toys would have a place to rest. I set my Pandora playlist to my "Disney" station and hooked up my speakers so we could all enjoy.

The girls were a bit shy, and just coming out of their morning naps, too. So after saying hello to them I stayed in the background for a bit while the girls played with their fathers, giving them plenty of time to get used to me and my camera.

The girls were soon feeling more confident and their personalities began to shine. I knew that they loved their gymnastics and dance class, and asked them to show me a few moves.

We paused for snack, juice and a potty break. They're in the potty training stage, and one of them didn't quite make it. (Just keeping it real, here.) But no worries. After a quick clean-up and change of clothes she was ready to play again.

She decided to wander the yard and explore a bit, and I followed along to capture her adventure.

Then it was back to giggling and dancing with her sister. This is one of my favorite images of the day.

With both girls in good spirits, it was time to grab a few family shots.

So, just how did I keep those smiles coming? With a magical (and hilarious) puppet show put on by my husband (who is also my assistant for many shoots). While I shot the pictures, he borrowed the girls' favorite dolls and had them moving and grooving around my shoulders and arms. It not only entertained the girls, but the fathers were cracking up, as well.

The girls then decided to put on their own puppet show on top of their fathers.

The "stars" of the show.

Dolls in hand, we made our way to a favorite local park, where we played a bit more.

We were winding down. One of the girls was "done" with the camera and just wanted to play (which was perfectly fine since we'd caught a LOT of fabulous shots already), so she stayed on the swings while we caught a few last pictures of her sister.

No muss, no fuss. Both kids finished the photo session in good spirits, and the parents did, too. Not only did I capture new family photos for them, but they now have a new memory of  a special playdate with their family.

And more than just pretty pictures... these are memories of their experience.

Because it's real life. It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Jessica + Nicole // class of 2013

Both bubbly, adorable and full of laughs, these girls are most definitely twins. And by all measures, best friends, too. So, while we were originally out to capture their senior portraits (which we did), we also used the opportunity to take plenty of pictures of the two of them together. We laughed, we played, we got tossed around in the wind.

Here are just a few of my favorites from the day...

Showing off just a couple of pieces of their personalities... Jessica adores her collection of Nicholas Sparks books, while Nicole is known for wearing a bow in her hair (and has one to coordinate with each outfit).

And, oh yeah... have I mentioned that they are both six-time world dance champions? WOW.

And my personal favorite from the day...

the Tomoda family

Hide and Satomi quickly welcomed me into their beautiful home and treated me like a treasured guest. I was introduced to both sets of their parents (who were visiting from Japan) and, of course, their new baby girl Kao. Once we got some music going, it was as if we had created an impromptu party. Let the fun begin...

I love tiny baby bits & pieces. Check out those feathery lashes...

And, of course... teeny, tiny toes.

This elephant was a handmade gift from one of the grandmothers.

Proud grandmothers...

Below is actually one of my favorite images, being a momentary peek into their world.

I am so honored that I was invited to capture these special family moments for them to treasure always.
